Especially in times of mass dissemination of false information (‘fake news’), communication by and about science has shown how important low-threshold accessible media formats that invite interaction are. In this way, scientific research and results are made comprehensible and understandable to the public.
Formats that go beyond traditional internal publishing have been steadily gaining in importance for some time. In addition to individual researchers, research training groups, collaborative research centres, non-profit associations or university and non-university research institutions, for example, are also using blogs, podcasts or social media to address an audience beyond the respective specialist community and even outside academia. The following formats are particularly worth mentioning.
