High Integration of Research Monographs in the European Open Science infrastructure

www.hirmeos.eu

High Integration of Research Monograph in European Open Science Infrastructure (HIRMEOS) is a 30-month project funded under the Horizon 2020 Program of the European Commission. It focuses on the monograph as a significant mode of scholarly communication in the Humanities and Social Sciences and tackles the main obstacles of the full integration of important platforms supporting open access monographs and their contents.

HIRMEOS aims at prototyping innovative services for monographs in support of Open Science infrastructure by providing additional data, links and interactions to the documents, at the same time paving the way to new potential tools for research assessment. By improving the already existing publishing platforms and repositories participating to the OpenAIRE infrastructure, HIRMEOS will increase its impact and help including more disciplines into the Open Science paradigm, widening its boundaries towards Humanities and Social Sciences to reach out new fields up to now poorly integrated.

HIRMEOS intends to transform collections of passive documents into rich content by adding to them 8 types of data aligned with Open Science standards if possible, that will allow to integrate them with the other types of knowledge production. Innovative services for monographs will be prototyped in view of full integration in the European Open Science Cloud by providing additional data, links and interactions to the documents, paving the way to new potential tools for research assessment. The platforms participating (OpenEdition Books, OAPEN Library, EKT Open Book Press, Ubiquity Press and Göttingen University Press) will be enriched with tools that enable identification, authentication and interoperability (via DOI, ORCID, Fundref), and tools that enrich information and entity extraction (INRIA (N)ERD), the ability to annotate monographs (Hypothes.is), and gather usage and alternative metric data.

HIRMEOS will also enrich the technical capacities of the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB), the most significant indexing service for open access monographs globally, to receive automated information for ingestion, while it will also develop a structured certification system to document monograph peer-review.

Göttingen State and University Library participates in several work packages, leading the WP 7 Community Outreach and Exploitation. In particular, a mode of communication and outreach will be designed which aims at strengthening HIRMEOS’ international network and core mission and fostering the joint development and aligned implementation of state-of-the-art services.
